Bir oduncu işe gitme vakti geldiğinde baltasının olmadığını fark eder. Komşusunu gözler ve komşusunda tam bir balta hırsızı tipi olduğunu fark eder: bakışları, mimikleri, konuşma biçimi...
Bir kaç gün sonra oduncu, baltasını ormanda düşürdüğü yerde bulur. Komşusunu yeniden gözlediğinde, hiç de bir balta hırsızına benzemediğini fark eder: ne bakışlarıyla, ne mimikleriyle, ne de konuşma biçimiyle.
